This project was submitted as an intitial response to a brief for the STAND Lost Trawlermens competition in Hull and our Concept “ABSENCE and PRESENCE” makes reference to the experiences of the community of Hessle Road. It is as relevant now as it was at the height of the Fishing Industry...
Developing the concept, the site represents the Individual and the Community as well as the threshold between land and sea where movement is created through material use, light and routes emphasising the ebb and flow of tides, calm summer breezes and winter storms, arrival and departure.
The concept development centres on the site with an understanding that the narrative goes beyond its boundaries into the city where Absence and Presence is represented along the pedestrian route, a memory trail, drawing people along the river route to the city and back.
The site offers opportunities for formal use as well as for individual contemplation and joy.
Open to the river’s edge the transition between public path and site is blurred through material use encouraging activity from passersby. A defined threshold allows processional use for formal occasions.
