The Rainbow Children’s Centre was built as part of the SureStart programme of work established to raise ambition and opportunities for children and families. The programme aims to provide the best start in life by increasing the availability of childcare for all children, improving health and emotional development for young children, supporting parents as parents and in their aspirations towards employment.
The brief for this shortlisted building included provision for childcare and in addition, training rooms, a jobshop, café, a medical suite, a large administration office as well as the usual service and support areas. West Hull Women’s Centre also requested to have their own suite of rooms included in the scheme including areas for training, counseling and administration.
The design concept was based on a notion of nurturing, cradling a child and as the child develops and grows, releasing the hold for the child to explore the world independently. This concept is expressed strongly within the childcare spaces, clearly defining the age group use areas. In overall design terms we were concerned with the vulnerability of the building on the main street. Our aim was to create a secure but friendly building.
