The conversion of this listed building to a contemporary dwelling offered us the opportunity to build on our ideas of creating contemporary solutions by understanding the spirit of historic buildings and landscapes. In this case the double height space to the front of the building is enjoyed at ground level and on a new mezzanine. Careful detailing respects and compliments the powerful form of the existing building.
The old Coach House situated within the heart of the market town of Beverley, East Yorkshire, is a grade two listed building, located within a conservation area. Derelict for sometime, the building had become very dilapidated and was in danger of collapse. The condition needed to be carefully evaluated and the design concentrates on retaining the ‘spirit’ of the existing building whilst adding contemporary interventions to provide an excellent home.
To overcome the serious instability of the building SALT proposed a relatively light gauge steel frame. Set internally within the building the steel cage provides support to the new floors and roof, avoiding any additional weight being applied to the existing structure. The existing masonry walls are strapped and bolted to the steel frame to avoid any further movement of the external envelope.
Working closely with the East Riding of Yorkshire Planning and Conservation Department has ensured that the building will contribute positively for centuries to come. New elements are clearly modern, avoiding confusion and emphasizing the qualities of the original fabric.
