The brief was to provide new facilities which not only served the community needs but also celebrated the ‘partnership’ between the local hosts and the Norwegian sponsors. The village brief was to provide a multifunctional hall with associated kitchen, toilet accommodation and stores with an interview room, smaller meeting room and computer suite. There is an active indoor bowling club within the village and a key component of the hall was the bowling mat rolled out from under the kitchen servery.

The proposed idea behind the development was to create a centrepiece in the village, where members of the community can gather. The community hall creates a new identity for the Parish and provides a space that can be used by different groups for a variety of activities and disciplines.

The retention of the village character has been respected by the use of traditional materials and skills, including the largest new lead roof in this area for centuries, new cobblestone walling as well as high quality brickwork and joinery detailing. The scale of the building allows it to fit comfortably with its neighbours whilst suggesting civic importance.

Internally it’s a completely different story, where natural materials have been used to produce a space full of light. A Scandinavian feel, reflecting the ambition of the project sponsors, is exaggerated by the use of a laminated timber frame, sliding plywood walls, and a sprung timber floor. This is further enhanced by the ‘gift’ of hand built Norwegian timber furniture unveiled at the recent opening.
